PSORIASIS

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is considered to be genetically linked and is an inflammatory disease.  It is characterised by skin cells that multiply much faster than normal cells.  When these cells reach the surface and die, raised, red plaques often covered with white scales form.

It is also considered an auto-immune condition caused by an overactive immune system that launches an inflammatory response within the body.  Psoriasis is a chronic (long term) condition that comes and goes in severity.

Hereditary predisposition is necessary before the disease can be triggered by environmental factors.

Psoriasis is definitely not contagious.

Symptoms:

  • Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
  • Small scaling spots
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Itchy, burning or soreness
  • Itchy plaques
  • Small bleeding points when scale is peeled away
  • Thickened, pitted or ridged nails
  • Swollen and stiff joints

Some of the triggers that cause psoriasis to flare up include:
  • Sore throat (streptococci)
  • Trauma to the skin including a cut, scrape, insect bite, infection or sunburn
  • Certain drugs can also have an effect
  • HIV
  • Stress
  • Obesity

Treatment

Psoriasis often requires medical treatment and there are a range of treatments available.  You can also find more about psoriasis on the medical based websites.

There are a number of things you can do to ensure the best management of your psoriasis which will hopefully help to minimise the condition.  While there may be some trial and error to determine what works best for you, some of the actions you can take include:

  • Keep the skin moist at all times, avoid allowing your skin to dry out
  • Manage your diet, increased body mass is associated with psoriasis, and for these individuals the treatment may be more difficult
  • Tar based shampoos may be of assistance
  • When bathing add oil, salts or fine ground oatmeal which may be of assistance. Ensure water is warm rather than hot, restrict baths to around 10 minutes and gently pat dry afterwards Moisturise immediately afterwards
  • Avoid very cold weather; if possible however during cold weather consider moisturising several times per day
  • Use a thick moisturiser
  • Use a humidifier
  • Never pick at patches or scales
  • Get some sun but not too much; don’t stay in the sun for too long. Use a sunscreen, check with your pharmacist which is best for psoriasis
  • Manage stress levels if required through meditation, yoga or light exercise and maintain a healthy diet
  • Reduce alcohol consumption and stop smoking
  • Keep a psoriasis diary to track your triggers; these are often unique to the individual. Understanding your condition will help you to manage it more effectively.

Natural Remedies

Some of the natural remedies that may assist psoriasis symptoms include:
  • Aloe Vera gel or cream that is rich in Aloe Vera
  • Apple cider vinegar to relieve itch from scalp psoriasis
  • Acupuncture or Reiki for stress reduction
  • Use of gentle cleansers that do not strip the oils from the skin.

Psoriasis is a frustrating and difficult condition.  It is best managed at home through a disciplined approach in your lifestyle while accepting that medical intervention will be of assistance when required.

For some a gluten-free diet can result in a significant improvement in psoriasis.

Diet

A sensible diet is important. Foods with polyphenols have been shown to help improve general health and skin health. Polyphenols improve the gut flora and fauna which impact the skin. Foods with polyphenols can be researched on the web but some for example are:
  • Blueberries
  • Crab Apple
  • Strawberries
  • Whole grain rye breads
  • Celery seed
  • Capers
  • Star Anise & Cloves

Eye Infections and Blepharitis!

Eye Infections and Blepharitis!

When a customer asked for advice on how to manage her recurring eye infections, I smiled at my fellow traveler through a life with problem eyes!

As a small child I suffered constantly with conjunctivitis and as an adult, had lumpy inflamed eyes, the occasional sty and never left the house without my sunglasses.  I was diagnosed with Blepharitis.

Symptoms include:

  • itchy or burning eyes and eyelids
  • feeling that something is in your eye
  • the edge of your eyelids are red and maybe swollen
  • loss of eye lashes
  • watery eyes
  • sensitivity to sunlight
  • crusty or sticky eyelashes, especially in the morning
On top of these symptoms I sadly developed and allergy to eye drops used in treating the symptoms of blepharitis.  With these problems I took the decision to never wear contact lenses, never wear mascara and the current fashion of false eyelashes was not even considered.

The cause of blepharitis is largely due to bacteria or the over-abundance of flora and fauna around the eyes.   With some simple changes I now have relatively healthy eyes, regularly wear basic eye makeup and rarely have a flare up of symptoms.
My eye health regime involves:

  • Actively washing my eyes, with particular emphasis around the lashes. I use handmade olive oil soap with goats’ milk, this is both very gentle and results in a thorough cleanse. I take care not to get the soap in my eyes.  This in itself is sufficient to maintain good eye health 95% of the time!
  • On the few occasions I have a flare up of symptoms, I flush my eyes with single use tubes of saline drops (sterile, and preservative free) and wipe each eye individually with sterile eye wipes. These products are readily available from most pharmacies.

  • Always wary of what a manufacturer lists on their product labels. Fragrances, preservatives and other harsh chemicals will irritate and damage the sensitive skin around your eye.  Managing blepharitis is all about constant and disciplined cleansing of your eyes with organic 'natural' skin care products.

5 Ways to perfect skin!

5 Ways to perfect skin!

What’s the secret to maintaining natural, perfect skin?

Well there isn’t just one way to do it, there’s 5!
DON'T SKIP YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP!
A good night’s sleep counteracts stress, tops up your energy banks, and it relaxes your muscles and your skin!  Relaxed skin allows for better blood circulation.  You can get away with 6 or so hours of sleep once in a while but eight hours of sleep is best!

A little SUN is good! … Too much is not!
A measured amount of sunshine will provide your skin with the vital vitamin D it needs … but too much sun can cause irreparable damage due to overexposure to UV radiation causing premature over-aging.  Remember sunburn is cumulative! There are, however, other benefits to sunshine.  The right amount of UVB rays actually enhance skin barrier functions. It can help in relieving fibromyalgia pain. Treating skin diseases, such as psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and scleroderma.  If you do go out in the sun for prolonged periods make sure you use sunscreen!

Be aware of what ‘your’ skin needs
Find out what type of skin you have?  Your skin is not the same as anyone else’s, so you should do your own research into natural substances that work for you!  There is only one YOU!  Follow a routine using products you like and note how they affect your skin.  Keep notes on the reactions and results you get!  A glowing skin will reward your efforts!  There are 7 skin types: Normal, Oily, Combination, Sensitive, Dry, Aging and Irritated Dry Skin.

Pamper YOURSELF
Once in while treat yourself!  Have a stress relieving massage or a facial. A facial will open the pores and cleanse the skin and keep it fresh!
What YOU EAT today shows up IN YOUr skin tomorrow
As they say, garbage-in, garbage-out!  And guess where it shows up? … In your skin!  The previous advice is good but if you don’t watch what you put in your mouth you will end up with unwanted consequences.  And then you will have to work harder to turn it all around!  Eat natural foods, fresh vegetables, fruits, some carbohydrates, some fats, plant based proteins, and clean fresh alkaline water.  Restrict your intake of sugars, dairy products and meat proteins.  Attaining clear and flawless skin may be a struggle but …. aren’t you worth it!

Solve Your Wrinkle Problem!

Solve Your Wrinkle Problem!

Loose, wrinkly, ‘crepey’ skin: It’s the prominent reason women think they are getting older!

What can women do to make themselves look younger!  Women across Australia and the U.S. are using newly discovered natural ingredients that are less expensive to firm up and tighten sagging skin caused by the aging process.  And they are using them in the comfort of their homes and not spending fortunes on unnecessary and expensive surgeries.

Skincare specialists acknowledge that remedial surgery and the risk of scarring are not only unnecessary but dangerous.  Today premier scientific discoveries and medical developments are providing amazing outcomes at a fraction of the cost and reducing the unnecessary risks of hurtful surgical procedures.

To address these concerns dermatologists always suggest invasive and expensive surgical procedures as solutions. They continuously recommend painful procedures such as chemical peels, laser treatments and injections.  There are more temperate and benign alternatives to choose from!

The science behind our methods and products rests in our natural micro emulsions, natural emulsifiers & thickeners, humectants, and other natural skin care ingredients. These are used to provide stable, effective skin care treatments to combat the aging process that are biologically gentle on the body, creating soothing, lasting effects safely and at a much lesser cost!

Is Your Skin Porous?

Is Your Skin Porous?

Our skin reflects our general health and wellbeing.  It’s not only the largest organ in our body but it is also permeable.  To demonstrate this, rub a clove of garlic on the sole of your foot and within minutes you will taste garlic in your mouth.  The skin absorbs what it comes in contact with and what we apply on it.
While our skin offers protection and is a barrier against potentially harmful substances, it is certainly not impenetrable; our skin can absorb both good and bad substances.  The good news is that the skin is excellent at absorbing nutrients through skin care products.  The bad news is some ingredients in skin care products are harmful to our wellbeing.
This site will inform you of the 5 steps for the care and wellness of your skin in the harsh Australian climate.  The purpose is to assist you in making informed choices when next you purchase your Australian skin care products and ultimately in the care of your skin.

OR Natural is dedicated to the principle of natural skin care using quality natural ingredients.  Our products are vegan friendly as no animal products are used with the exception of fresh goats’ milk in olive oil goats’ milk soap.

Cracked Heels

Cracked Heels

Potentially a Dangerous Condition

Cracked heels are painful yet easily prevented.  They are caused by a build-up of hard skin around the heals and if allowed to build up over time the hard skin can no longer flex with the pressure of walking and cracks and splits the tender skin below.  This is not only painful but the split is an open wound exposed to infection.

The prevention to this painful and potentially dangerous condition is to simply file away the hard skin build up with a pumice stone. This should be done on regular bases to prevent the build-up of hard skin prone to cracking. After filing with pumice stone the exposed new skin is flexible and able to flex while standing and walking.

Dry skin is attributed to the cause of hard skin in the first place. It’s therefore important to keep the heels moisturised and for this purpose a balm would be idea.

Skin Cancer: a Personal Journey

Skin Cancer:  a Personal Journey

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) - Skin Cancer

I had my first skin cancer at 26.  A basal cell carcinoma (BCC) one of the good ones; annoying but not dangerous.  Because of my age, my Dermatologist recommended I have about 6 moles removed as a precaution.  Wise advice as it was discovered one of them was turning cancerous.

I had an idyllic childhood, my grandfather lived by the water at Sawtell.  His was one of the few houses that overlooked the ocean and the sand was only about 4 metres from his front steps.  Every holiday was spent there, swimming, exploring rock pools and running around playing games with my cousins.

When all the family was there my father spent all his time rock fishing. He died of melanoma cancer.  There are some excellent treatments available for melanoma cancer today but not so when my father was ill.

I experienced severe blistering sunburn on a regular basis as a child.  My mother used to chase me with the zinc cream and a hat but I could run very fast.  My second BCC occurred about 10 years later and about 10 years after that I started having one or two removed every few years. This is ongoing.

My first squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) somewhat more nasty than a BCC was located on the end my nose.  Unfortunately within a centimetre of the SCC was a BCC. So a big chunk of my nose had to go and I am grateful that my Plastic Surgeon was an excellent one.

There are so many good sunscreen products available today and I take heart when I see small children at the beach with their hats on, their sun protective clothing and their parents often applying sunscreen.  Precaution is everything and protecting the young must be the mission of every parent.
