Which diet is best for healthy hair, skin and nails?

Which diet is best for healthy hair, skin and nails?

Eczema and dermatitis are skin conditions that are accompanied by redness and inflammation and fatty acids are essential for addressing and reducing these symptoms but are also useful for moisturizing your skin.  You can also take evening primrose oil or fish oil as a supplement.

Colder weather, air conditioning and lack of exercise will no doubt impact our hair, skin and nails!

It’s a given!  There are some simple modifications you can make to your eating patterns to improve your wellbeing and appearance.  Not eating even a few nutrients every day can have a major effect on your appearance.  Nutritional experts say that eating certain foods that contain the right vitamins and minerals, will feed your skin, hair and nails in the right way!  Essential fatty acids - found in oily fish, hemp seed oil and nuts - are vital for healthy hair!  A lack of zinc - found in red meat - can lead to weak nails and dry skin.  Vitamin A - found in many dried fruits, such as, apricots is essential for replenishing skin cells.

So what do you need to eat for a super fresh and clear complexion and fashion model hair? Dry skin: Dry skin can most likely be attributed to a lack of vitamins A and E, and a deficiency of essential fatty acids.  Experts recommend you eat vegetables that contain a large amount of beta carotene that the body turns into vitamin A by your liver. Skin: You can battle a range of skin problems by increasing your daily consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables!

Antioxidants track down and destroy free radicals in the body and beta carotene is one of these important antioxidants vital for protecting us from harmful chemicals that are absorbed from our environment in many different ways.  Beta carotene-rich vegetables include green leafy varieties like spinach, mustard greens; and sweet potatoes, cantaloupe melon and dried apricots!

Natural is Best!

Wrinkles and age lines – Inevitably wrinkles will result over time and the lack of vitamins A, C and E, also selenium and zinc is a major contributor to the aging process.

Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant that fights damage already done to your skin.  Vitamin C helps body build collagen in your body. It is a protein that is the main connective tissue in skin.  More collagen means less sagging.  Citrus fruits, such as, kiwi fruit, blackcurrants are great but red peppers, chili peppers, papaya and kale have more vitamin C than oranges!

Vital for eliminating wrinkles and removing acne scars is Vitamin E! It is a powerful antioxidant used to help the body heal and prevent scarring. It also keeps the red blood cells healthy so more oxygen and nutrients can be carried to the skin's surface.  Vitamin E can be found in sunflower seeds, olive oil and green leafy vegetables like spinach.

Foods containing selenium include; eggs, Brazil nuts and wholegrain bread and pastas, tuna and turkey.  Selenium works in combination with vitamin E as an antioxidant.  It also helps regulate your metabolism.  It assists your body process food properly so the right amount of nutrients can navigate their way to your skin.

Evidence has emerged that indicates the importance of eating foods high in zinc to help combat adult acne.  Zinc helps your body repair itself and is vital for skin renewal. Foods rich in zinc include garlic, pumpkin seeds, oysters and nuts.  Alternatively, you can take a recommended dose of a zinc supplement every day.

Fruits and Vegetables contain the Vitamins You Need!

You also need to include oily fish such as sardines or mackerel into your diet to get enough fatty acids.

If you eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, you will also be absorbing a range of other beneficial vitamins.

Sulphur and biotin are two that are vital for skin health.  Also Vitamins A and B5 help maintain healthy skin, vitamin B2 is essential for promoting cell growth.

Your skin is your largest organ in your body!

Your skin is your largest organ in your body!

What goes on you, ends up *in* you!

Did you know it is the largest organ in our body?

It also has many functions, it:

acts as a barrier to the external world, protecting the internal organs from infections
    eliminates waste through perspiration
seals in moisture maintaining the delicate fluid balance in the body
    produces vitamin D
is full of sensory cells that send feedback to your brain in relation to the external environment.

One of the interesting facts about our skin is that it is porous.  To prove this yourself, rub a clove of garlic on the soles of your feet and within minutes you will taste the garlic in your mouth or rub a fresh chili with your fingers and you will start to sweat on your scalp.  The skin absorbs what it comes in contact with.

Our skin is vital to our health, yet many people fail to take care of it.  Informed choices regarding what skincare products you use on your skin is critical to optimize your health.  What goes on you ends up in you!

A US 2004 study found that the average adult uses nine personal care products each day, containing 126 different chemicals.  The effect of these chemicals on and in your body are not fully understood, there are however two that stand out are:

Parabens, a commonly used preservative in skincare products, have been found to spur on the growth of various types of breast cancer.
Sodium lauryl/laureth Sulphate (SLS/SLES), a surfactant, detergent and emulsifier used in thousands of cosmetic products is a skin irritant and linked to cancer.

There is a connection between chemical exposures, in particular those we use on our skin and adverse health conditions ranging from mild irritation to various cancers.  When choosing skin care products, check the fine print in the ingredient list and remember ……. *what goes on you, ends up *in* you!*

What is Zeolite?

What is Zeolite?

What is Zeolite: Why It Can Detox & Cleanse Your Skin Like Nothing Else!

Not many beauty ingredients begin with the letter Z, but zeolite does and it's definitely an A-lister when it comes to beauty.  Never heard of it? We've got you covered.

Zeolite is a master of detoxification!!

  • Mask: In a fine powder form, zeolite makes a wonderfully detoxifying mask.  Mix 1 tablespoon of zeolite powder with 2 tablespoons of water to form a paste.  Slather it on your face and leave it for up to an hour (I've found the longer the better).  When you wash it off, be prepared for seriously soft skin and pores that are noticeably less noticeable!  It'll do a deep cleanse on your pores and help heal any existing blemishes.
  • Cleanser: Mix the same proportions as for the mask but wash off after about a minute so as not to dry out your skin with daily use.  For something more moisturizing, try swapping the water with your favourite face oil.  Follow with your favourite toner and moisturizer.
  • Exfoliator: With its fine, sand-like texture, zeolite is a great gentle exfoliator.  Place 1 tablespoon zeolite powder in the palm of your hand or a small bowl, and using a soft brush (a kabuki brush is ideal), gently work the powder into your skin in small, circular motions.  Be careful around more delicate areas (eyes, etc.) and do not inhale the powder.  Then, simply wash your face with warm water and a soft cloth, followed by a splash of cold water to reduce inflammation.
What is it?

First formed more than 300 million years ago, zeolite is a mineral mostly made up of silica (the third most abundant trace element in the human body) and alumina tetrahedra.

There are many natural variations, each one unique to its environment.  Some formed when volcanic rocks and ash reacted with seawater; others are freshwater variations.  In Australia, for example, zeolite is also known as clinoptilolite and is thought to be one of the oldest deposits of its kind in the world.

Why should I use it?

Despite so many of our best efforts, it's nearly impossible to live a totally and completely clean life.  Toxins and pollutants find ways to sneak into our skin and bodies, so it's crucial to find a safe, natural way to detox them right back out again.  That's where zeolite comes in.  Like so many other volcanic substances, zeolite is a master of detoxification.  It has an extraordinary ability to absorb, hold, release, and exchange different chemicals, nutrients, toxins, and ions according to need in your body.  Much like activated charcoal, it helps to draw out impurities in your skin and is even being studied as a way to reduce and stop the growth of skin cancer in dogs through topical application.

How does it work?

Zeolite is unique in that its honeycomb, microporous cellular structure is one of nature's few negatively charged minerals, which means it's able to attract positively charged contaminants.  Inside these negatively charged honeycomb "cages," healthful minerals such as potassium can be found.  Zeolite swaps its healthful, negatively charged minerals for any positively charged contaminants on or in your body.  Basically, it takes away the bad stuff by replacing it with good stuff.

Since your body doesn't absorb the zeolite, the pollutants it sucks up are safely removed when you wash it off your skin!

What should I look for?

Now that you know why adding zeolite to your skin care routine is beneficial, there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for products.  There are a lot of brands using zeolite in their masks and cleansers these days, but if you want to go the DIY route (see below), powdered zeolite is easy to find on sites like Amazon.

However, it's incredibly important that you're buying only high-quality, micronized zeolite (preferably clinoptilolite) that's been properly cleaned and is 100 percent pure.  Zeolite is sourced from the earth and needs to be separated from other naturally occurring minerals that aren't so good for your health.  You don't want commercial-grade zeolite, as it's probably not natural or pure and may contain unknown contaminants.

Natural Pure Zeolite

How do I use it?

There are a few ways to use this all-star ingredient topically for your skin:

When trying any skin care substance for the first time, always do a patch test on your cheek or neck prior to use to test whether you're allergic.

There are many, many other uses for zeolite, from water purification (in much the same way that charcoal is used) to helping your body achieve its optimal slightly alkaline pH.  Have fun experimenting, and your skin can thank us later!

*As with any new ingredient, please make sure to check with your doctor before using.

Water

Water

Our bodies are composed of about 70% water it is therefore vital for good health that this balance is maintained.  If we do not drink enough water it disappears from our blood supply which leads to narrowing of vessels, high blood pressure, fatigue due to lack of oxygen and risk of strokes.  It also disappears from the intercellular space which leads to raised acidity levels, gout, kidney stones and lower immunity and finally it disappears from the cells themselves leading to higher cholesterol, reduced metabolism and accelerated aging.

We assume that we know when our body requires water, when we get thirsty, but it is not that simple.  The older we get the less we feel thirsty, dehydration is a major problem in aging.  There are other signs that indicate we do not drink enough water:

·         Dry mouth, (sugary drinks and alcohol are not the solution)
·         Dry skin and premature aging
·         Dry eyes
·         Joint pains
·         Decrease in muscle mass
·         Fatigue due to lack of oxygen in the blood supply
·         Hunger pains
·         Digestive problems
·         Stay sick longer, toxins are not flushed out of the body
·         Dark urine

Maintaining the water balance in our bodies is vital for our health and wellbeing. Loss of water leads to a chain reaction of health issues and premature aging.  If you have read this far it’s probably a good idea that you drink a glass of water!

Zeolite -- An exfoliant and detoxifier!

Zeolite -- An exfoliant and detoxifier!

Zeolite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral

Its crystalline structure and negative charge adsorbs heavy metals which makes it a very useful natural material to cleanse with.  In powdered form dissolved in water it is taken internally to detoxify the body and externally as a soap additive to remove heavy metals from hands and body to provide a deep cleanse.  In various nuclear facilities it is used to wash uniforms to remove radioactive particles.  If you choose to use it to detoxify internally always use it in natural powdered form and not in liquid form.  If you want an external deep skin cleanse use a gentle soap with zeolite.
